Where Is Equality?

Updated: Oct 14, 2018

Two black men were in a Starbucks waiting for a friend. After sitting in the coffee shop for a short period of time, a Starbucks employees called the police on them for trespassing. The call was made because the two men had used the restroom without purchasing food. Starbucks is known as a social place for people to gather, hang out, and enjoy one another's company. Listening to the statement "two men were arrested for waiting for their friend" sounds absurd to me. Many people agree that this was an atrocity. Once the word got out, protest and petition against Starbucks ensued. One of the protestors quotes included, "I am someone, and I demand equality." Each and every person that enters this place of business should be treated equally and with respect. If a Caucasian individual entered Starbucks and waited for a friend, people would not have felt threatened enough to call the police. Why does the color of one's skin change the perspective of how people view others. One protestor stated "it is a shame that (in) the year 2018 we're still putting up with this mess," he said. "This country was built on the backs of black and brown people and now Starbucks is going to treat us like we're second class." Starbucks is treating African Americans unfairly and the reason for the imbalance comes down to their skin color. Something must be done to change this! The fact that prejudice still occurs on an everyday basis is flabbergasting.
